Lyon's Festival of Lights grew out of a tradition dating to 1852, when residents placed candles in their windows to honour the Virgin Mary. Today it runs for four nights around 8 December and is one of the largest light festivals in the world, with video-mapping shows on the Cathedral of Saint-Jean, the Basilica of Fourvière and the facades around Place des Terreaux.
