People practicing other religions (including the Mennonites) had to do so in secret ‘shelter churches’ like the Singel Church. Leegte uses the windows to bring the church from the shadows to the foreground. Radiant light from the installation makes the building a beacon of warmth and safety in the dark night.

Lynne Leegte’s installation Windows is an extension of the window art of the 17th century Singel Church located just behind it. Like today, religious freedom was under pressure; even in the relatively liberal, Calvinist country of the Netherlands.
